I'm On a Roll...

Or as otherwise defined...I am super bored and reading many magazines!!  I am going through the May issue of Food Network Magazine and love the article entitled, "100 Greatest Cooking Tips of All Time".  I am not going to bore you with the full list, but below are some of my faves:
  1. After working with garlic, rub your hand vigorously on your stainless steel sink for 30 seconds before washing them.  It will remove the odor. (Gerard Craft of Niche and Taste).  Hmmmmm sounds a little gross. I would rather buy those stainless steel bars (they look like soap) from Bed, Bath & Beyond.
  2. When chopping herbs, toss a little salt onto the cutting board; it will keep the herbs from flying around. (Joanna Chang from Flour Bakery & Cafe).  Doable!
  3. For rich creamy dressings made healthy, substitute 1/2 of the mayo with greek-style yogurt. (Ellie Krieger)
  4. Take the time to actually read the recipes before you begin.  (John Besh)  Yeah....I have a tendency of just jumping in.
  5. Don't use oil in the water when you are cooking pasta - it will prevent the sauce from sticking to the cooked pasta.  (Missy Robbins)
  6. For safety, put a wine cork on the tip of a knife before putting the knife in the drawer. (Giuseppe Tentori) Smmmaarrrrttttt!!!
  7. When making mashed potatoes, after you drain the potatoes, return them to the hot pan, cover tightly and let steam for 5 minutes.  This allows the potatoes to dry out so they will mash to a beautiful texture and soak up the butter and cream more easily.  (Wolfgang Puck)  YUM...when is dinner?  This is making me hungry!
  8. When you grill, pull your steaks out of the fridge one hour ahead of time so they can come to room temperature. (Geoffrey Zakarian)
  9. Clean as you go.  (Rick Bayless)  FOR SURE!
  10. Cook more often.  Don't study, just cook.  (Masaharu Morimoto) OK...babe????

Very Interesting...

I get a gazillion emails a day.  I usually scan through them super fast, press delete and move on.  This morning, however, I read a headline that intrigued me.  It read, "23 Home Products You Don't Need to Buy"

Here are my favorites:
Scuff remover - To get rid of scuff marks, rub the inside of a banana peel over silverware, leather shoes and leather furniture. Wipe with a soft cloth. Be sure to test on a small, inconspicuous section first.

Hard water stain remover - We are prone to hard water stains here in FL.  To get rid of lime buildup, make a paste of 1 teaspoon vinegar and 2 tablespoons salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth.

Drain cleaner - Sprinkle 1/4 cup baking soda in the drain, followed by 1 cup vinegar. Let sit for 15 minutes, then flush with a pot of boiling water.

Stainless steel polish - A staple in most garages, WD-40 also works wonders on stainless steel. Just spray and rub with a cloth for a spotless shine.

Washing machine cleaner - Is it bad that I didn't know you had to clean your washing machine?  Using the warm water setting, fill the basin and add 2 cups white vinegar. Let stand for an hour, then run the cycle as usual.

Mirror Cleaner - Clean a bathroom mirror with shaving cream (the old-fashioned white kind, not a gel variety), then wipe with a soft cloth. This tip also helps keep the mirror fog-free after showers.

Vase cleaner - I can never get my vases 100% clean.  To get glass vases sparkling clean, fill three-quarters with hot water, add a teaspoon of baking soda and shake. Let stand overnight; rinse.

Weed killer - Instead of using harsh chemicals, spray vinegar in the cracks of your walkway to get rid of weeds.  I've tried this before and it works well!

Grill degreaser - To maintain a clean barbecue grill, sprinkle dry baking soda on a damp brush, scrub, then rinse.  This is for hubby LOLOL
